Our New Year's gift to you: some story starters to get your imaginations revved up. Use the photos and the captions to write any story you please. Or take off in your own direction! As usual, photos by Anne Mazer; captions by Ellen Potter. Happy writing! love, Anne and Ellen

photo by Anne MazerWhenever things got rough, Uncle Herbie put on his rose-colored glasses. Poo! Much good it did for him in the end . . .

Have these summer campers been invaded by actual Vikings sailing through a time portal?

Is this guy making his escape from a mad Countess? Or perhaps he’s a young crime scene investigator called in to examine ancient bones found in the castle's turret?

Maybe the strange arrangement of the dolls was left as a clue? Hmmm.

#3 I think is a crime scene investigator making a great escape. He just had a moment where he pieced all the puzzle pieces together, but with his luck the murderer was waiting for him in the shadows inside the castle. Scared for his own life, the young investigator fled up as many flights of stairs as he could. Now he's stuck at the uppermost floor of the castle. He sees the arm rising up the ladder, the man following him grinning because he knows that he trapped him. What will happen?

Love that, Samantha! Are you going to write the story now? -- Anne

Actually I'm working on a very similar story right now, and I'm having a blast doing research!! It's sooooo fun to work on.

A bit creepy with those strange dolls while the viking are really cool. :)

#2 with the vikings immediately made me think of Percy Jackson. I don't know. Something about Camp Half-Blood and the lake and how they always have extreme sports like rock climbing up an exploding volcano. I think a canoe fight on the lake against some vikings fits right in there. Hey, when you're a demigod, you never know when you have to fight some vikings! Hahaha love it. I'm constantly amazed at how Anne gets all these pictures. You seem like you're always at the right place at the right time.

LOVE number 2! I might use that some day. Up to my neck right now in stories right now, so might have to wait a few years. :D I think I am obsessed with writing.

January 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConily6

Same here. Obsessed with writing my current story. Anywhere I go I have my notebook that I wrote all over in permanent marker, you know, just to add color and personality. Anybody else decorate their writing folders/notebooks with everything they like? :)

January 30, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSamantha

To answer your question. I decorate my notebooks with stickers, pen, marker, pencil, bits of paper, glue, crayons, lots of stuff like that. I love decorating things. I am really looking forward to writing a story with my orange tabby cat as a character.

@ Samantha :) Yeshhhhh!!! I love, love, love adding personality to my things :DD I just recently did over my binder with sharpies, scrapbook paper, and stickrs ^.^ I loveeee Sharpies by the way haha :)

Ohhhh and I love Treble Clefs! I draw them on EVERYTHING! :DD On my homework, hands, people ( if they say I can) notebooks, My writing, my brother haha, and ect! I just love drawing them ^.^ I'm 13 haha :)

February 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHayley D.

Awesome!!! Haha :) I love decorating my notebook in sharpie but I'm always terrified I'm gonna mess up and then I can't fix it. Also, I used to hate ripping pages out of a notebook. So I would cross out the number of pages thats written at the bottom of the cardboard-cover notebooks to show how many pages I actually had left. I was a nerd about that :)

Does anybody draw to help them write better? For me, it kinda just helps me remember what I was thinking because most of the time I doodle before I even start writing and it eventually becomes part of my story.

February 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSamantha

I'm not sure :) But if I lose thought on my school or something I tend to start drawing ^-^ Then I get back to work haha. So maybe, just maybe :)

February 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHayley D.

@Hayley D. You'd be surprised at how drawing can help you write. I just started drawing one day and now that drawing is what my entire story revolves around. Wish I could draw people's faces though. I just can't, no matter how hard I try :)
Also, just everyday stuff can help you write. A friend said a joke to me. I thought it was so funny that now it's become an ongoing joke in my story. Hey, anything can happen, right? Has that ever happened to anyone?

February 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSamantha

Totally :) I'm going to make a character who loves everything treble clef in my story lolz ^-^

February 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHayley D.

So does your character love music or just how treble clefs look? :)

February 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSamantha

I'm not sure, but probably both haha :) Does anyone think that spilling ink should like, have a thing where writers can chat with each other? To talk about writing and ideas and such? :) I think that wuld be nice.

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHayley D.

Uhg I mean 'would' Haha just saw that :) I can't wait for the teen writing contest! :DD Anyone else excited and waiting impatiently? :)

February 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHayley D.

Would enter the current contest, but I don't have a good story yet. but I will enter hopefully!

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConily6

In other news one of my poem's is going in my grandparent's newsletter! I am sooooo excited, it's the first step to published writer! yippy! (Of course the editor said it would have to wait a little while) But it doesn't matter! YAY!

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConily6

i think the viking one is this:
a tale about a kid going to a medival camp, and hes kinda a "wimp", so , hes clumsy, computer geek, and was forced into the camp. no body likes him, and he screwed up and tipped the canoes, (will be a great description) making his cabin team lose. now the leader of his cabin team hates him and hes really sad, and hides in the wood to be alone, but something scares him, and he runs and gets lost. but the noise was the leader, and so they are lost together. in the end, the kid probally saves the day, or something, but eventually becomes friends with the leader
go ahead and use it!

February 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSomeone

Heyyy nice job " someone" :) Cool way of the story!

February 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHayley D.

Yeahh that writer chat thing would be cool.
And I love Sharpies. I love the smell of them even though everyone says its weird and toxic. -.- And I love to doodle. It's weird cuz I hate drawing things but I love doodling abstract and random stuff.

February 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBecca

Same thing here Becca, I love doodling! :)

February 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConily6

Sammatha- I love drawing my stories out! I like drawing my charaters, so I have a basic idea of what they look like. In fact I have a notebook with my latest story in it, it has two flaps that close in the center, So on the flaps I drew my two main charaters and the story inside! Yay for writing!

Give me a W!
W!
Give me a R!
R!
Give Me a I T I N G!
What's the spell?
Writing! YAY!!!!!

(Lol I am a little nuts, not insane, just a little bit nuts, maybe a crisp almoud) See you guys later.
